#GSD TALK: Coaching & Results Driven Leadership

Situation

"This could have been an email" - Your Team

Socially, we are being asked to innovate, deliver quickly, and challenge the status quo. As leaders, we can't demand more innovative and faster results without acknowledging that we are bound to encounter challenges along the way. The old paradigm of pretending to always have everything under control, where the team makes zero mistakes, is dead.

Organizations and individuals are optimized for the results they currently achieve. To attain different outcomes, we need the people in our organization to behave and perform their jobs differently. Effective coaching becomes crucial in this context, as leaders collaborate with and guide their team members to architect their own roadmap towards a shared goal. Through effective coaching, we can help team members optimize their outcomes.

However, there is a dark side to coaching. Expecting team members to graciously receive coaching, immediately comprehend, and flawlessly achieve improved outcomes sets us and our teams up for failure. Such coaching can be perceived as criticism, eroding trust and causing reluctance to accept guidance and experiment towards mastery. Without trust, most feedback will be rejected, leading to worse results.
